Sectors, Commissions
& Committees
The World Jewellery Confederation is organized according to sectors, or areas of interest. They are Sector A (Gem Materials, Trade and Laboratories, Sector B (Jewellery Distribution) and Sector C (Jewellery Manufacturing, Technology and Precious Metals).
Commissions may be formed to focus on specific topics of interest, and they may cover more than one such sector or act independently. Active commissions currently include the Diamond Commission, the Coloured Stone Commission, the Pearl Commission, the Gemmological Commission and the Coral Commission, all operating under auspices of Sector A. The Precious Metals Commission operates under the auspices of Sector C, while the Marketing and Education Commission, the Ethics Commission and the Sustainable Development Commission operate independently.
Among their various activities, the Diamond Commission, the Coloured Stone Commission, the Pearl Commission, the Gemmological Commission, the Coral Commission, the Precious Metals Commission and the Sustainable Development Commission are all responsible for producing Blue Books of industry standards and nomenclature.
Additionally, committees focusing on specific subjects may be created. Currently, these include the Technology Committee, the Jewellery Industry Supply Chain Nomenclature Committee, and the Laboratory-Grown Diamond Committee, which is affiliated to the Diamond Commission.,

Covering all issues concerned with coloured gemstones, the Coloured Stone Commission is responsible for the maintenance and updating of the Coloured Stone Blue Book of industry standards and nomenclature. It also produces guidance documents and online tools to assist member of the industry understand and apply the harmonized standards.

CORAL COMMISSION

MARKETING & EDUCATION COMMISSION
Covering a range of issues related to the marketing of gems and jewellery, the Marketing and Education Commission produces a range of educational guides that deal with ethical business practices, marketing and advertising strategies, human resource management and responsible environmental policies. The commission also oversees production of CIBJO’s comprehensive Retailer’s Reference Guide and oversees the management of its Jewellery Industry Greenhouse Gas Measurement Initiative.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION
Previously known as the Responsible Sourcing Commission, the Sustainable Development Commission covers all issues concerned with the responsible sourcing of natural gemstone and precious metals materials from the point at which they are extracted, and along the distribution chain. The commission is responsible for maintaining and updating the Responsible Sourcing Blue Book, which is a guidance document designed to instill responsible sourcing due diligence through the value chain and has developed a toolkit of templates, forms and documents to apply the Blue Book principles.

LABORATORY-GROWN DIAMOND COMMITTEE
The Laboratory-Grown Diamond Committee was created to develop a guidance document that will establish operating principle for the laboratory-grown diamond sector, including standards and nomenclature that will clearly distinguish between diamonds mined in a natural setting and diamond crystals that have been grown in a factory or laboratory. The committee is affiliated to the Diamond Commission.
