The evolving perception of ‘precious’ in the jewellery industry

Used to define objects of great value, the term “precious” has special significance where jewellery is concerned, because at least some of the materials of which such products are comprised typically are considered “precious” in and of themselves. But what constitutes a “precious” gemstone or a “precious” metal has evolved over time, and continues to do so in the current market environment, where not only the product type and quality are factors, but also source and provenance? Official Launch of International Fine Jewellery Academy

“The Blue List” was developed by the Jewellery Industry Supply Chain Nomenclature Committee, which is a multinational task force of experts working the CIBJO’s umbrella, with representatives from all key industry sectors. They were charged with creating a harmonised set of definitions of words and terms used to describe responsible supply chains, especially when marketing jewellery, ensuring that they are accurate, substantiated, and clearly and easily understood by all stakeholders and consumers. Once approved the document will serve as the universally accepted glossary of terminology for the jewellery, gemstone and precious metals industries related to responsible sourcing and sustainability. The seminar in Vicenza was the fourth and final presentation of the draft document in a four month-longs public consultation.
