CIBJO’s Gemmological Commission has addressed the need to establish accountability for the use of artificial intelligence in gemstone reporting, its chair, Hanco Zwaan, told the CIBJO Congress.

The commission has proposed adding the following paragraph to its guidance for the trade:

 “When artificial intelligence (AI) or machine-learning (ML) systems are used for testing, grading, interpretation or decision support, the gemmological laboratory shall ensure that such systems are subject to the same quality-assurance, control and verification requirements as conventional testing methods.”

Mr Zwaan told the Congress that AI must be fully accountable for its contributions to gemstone reporting.

He said he would step down as chair of the Gemmological Commission after the Congress.

CIBJO President Gaetano Cavalieri thanked Mr. Zwaan, who is resigning because of his many commitments, for his work as chair of the commission over an extended period.
